It is useful to monitor the oil from transmissions and gear boxes. While failures on these types of systems are not common, they can happen,
especially if moisture contamination is present (as seen in this report). Abrasion is another common problem in lube oils.
This may be due to excessive wear or silicon (dirt) contamination, and typically causes problems at the seals, leading to oil leaks.
