This can result in dumping millions of gallons of good oil annually, while doing little to prevent oil-related problems such as "leakers" — machines that leak oil from various seals, costing millions in new oil purchases and downtime. Quarterly oil analysis can eliminate leakers and other oil-related problems, with the added benefits of saving money in unnecessary oil purchases and the cost of getting rid of waste oil.

Industrial oil analysis can also be used to check the quality of incoming oil, reduce the number of oil types on the property, choose between oil vendors when prices are similar, and check waste oils for handling requirements before it is shipped.

The TAN, or Total Acid Number, is a neutralization test that determines the acidity of an oil. In order for the TAN to be useful, you have to know the TAN number on the unused oil product. An increase in this number indicates increasing acidity of the used oil.
